Dal Makhni Recipe

Spicy Thick Mix Pulses

Dal Makhani is a popular side dish that is taken with Rotis and Chapatis. This dish comes from the Punjabis in India. Prepared from lentils, this dish is protein rich.

The ingredients needed to prepare this dish are:
• Urad dhal (black lentils) - half cup
• Milk - 1 cup
• Tomato pulp - 3/4 cup
• Onions - 1/2 cup chopped
• Chilly powder - 1 tsp
• Ginger-Garlic paste - 1 tsp
• Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
• Coriander powder - 2 tsp
• Rajma - 1 tsp
• Oil - 1 tsp
• Salt - as per your taste
• Coriander - Chopped to your taste.

Soak Urad dhal and Rajma overnight. Clean and drain them and keep aside. Add two cups to water to this mixture and cook them in a pressure cooker. Overcooking them is better. Slightly mash them. Add milk and water to this mix and cook for about 10 minutes. Preheat a pan and add oil to it. Add cumin seeds to it and when they crackle add ginger-garlic paste and onions to it. Saute them till the onions are golden brown. Then add turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, tomato pulp, and a cup of water and cook for 4 minutes. Add the dhal mixture to this and cook for about 10 minutes. Add chopped Coriander to this to garnish. Serve hot with Rotis and Chapatis.
