Pav Bhaji Recipe

Pav Bhaji is made up of two words that give two different meanings in Marathi. Pav means "loaf" while bhaji means "vegetable dish". This dish is very famous all over the India however it has special importance in the regions of Gujarat and Mumbai.

It is the famous street food of India that is hot spicy and mouthwatering dish. It is very easy and hurriedly cooked dish. You can prepare it within fifteen minutes. It is very light food with good nutritious value. It does not demand heavy budget.

Things you need

There is a long list of things you need to prepare this dish however you should not be worried about it as you can find all these things easily in your kitchen.

Ingredients for the pav
  • Pavs (two ladi)
  • Butter (four tablespoon)
  • Bhaji masala (one tea spoon pav)
  • Ingredients for the bhaji
  • Potatoes (one and a half cup, boiled and crushed)
  • Cauliflower (one cup, finely cut)
  • Green peas (half cup)
  • Carrots (half cup, chopped)
  • Onion (one cup, chopped)
  • Capsicum (half cup, finely diced)
  • Tomatoes (two and half cups, sliced)
  • Turmeric (half teaspoon, powder)
  • Chili powder (half teaspoon)
  • Pav bhaji masala (one and a half teaspoon)
  • Black salt (half teaspoon)
  • Butter (four tablespoon)
  • Chili-garlic paste (grounded)
  • Kashmiri red chilies (dry four to five in number, drenched in warm water)
  • Cloves garlic (six in number)
For serving
  • 1. Onion one (large sized, cut)
  • 2. Lemon(four wedges)
  • 3. Coriander (one tablespoon, diced)

Method of cooking


How to prepare bhaji
  1. Peel the vegetables, carrots, cauliflower and peas. Cut them together in a single dish and wash them properly. Take a pan with sufficient capacity, pour water in and put all the vegetables in it. Let all vegetable boil, turn off the flame and drain them in colander.

  2. Take a large skillet, put butter in it and heat it on medium flame. When butter is melted, add capsicum and onion to saute for few minutes. After two minutes, add also the paste of garlic-chili paste and fry to soft the onions.

  3. Add chopped tomatoes and saute them till the masala leaves the oil.

  4. Then add white salt, turmeric powder, black salt, pavbhaji masala, chili powder, and saute for 4-5 minutes.

  5. Mash the potatoes with masher. Add these mashed potatoes along with other vegetables in the sauce that you have prepared. Saute for two minutes and then add half cup of water.

How to prepare pav
  1. Divide pav into two parts. Do this partition horizontally. Smear both the sides with butter then sprinkle pavbhaji. Keep the stove slow or else your pav may burn. It will give bad taste and besides this, it is unhealthy to have burn food.

  2. Put large tava on stove and let it heat. Cook both the sides of pav till they become of light brown color.

Follow up
  • Put the hot bhaji in serving plates with coriander and onion.
  • Enjoy pav with lemon wedges.
