Vermicelli Upma

When we think about vermicelli then the idea of sweet tasting dessert always come in our mind. But Indian cuisine has the blend of sweet and sour ingredients that makes the mix unusual ingredients the delicious and exotic ones. Such a recipe is of vermicelli upma which is eaten as breakfast meal and is made with vermicelli, onions and spices. Following is the simplest procedure written of making vermicelli upma.

  • One cup of vermicelli
  • One and half cups of water
  • Salt as per taste
  • One carrot
  • Half cup of peas
  • One teaspoon ginger paste
  • One medium sized onion
  • Four curry leaves
  • Quarter teaspoon turmeric (haldi)
  • A pinch of heeng
  • One teaspoon of mustard seeds (rai)
  • Handful of peanuts and cashew nuts
  • One teaspoon of urad daal
  • One teaspoon of chana daal
  • Green chilies
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • Quarter cup oil
Preparation Process:
Take one tablespoon of oil and roast vermicelli in it. Take another pan and pour rest of the oil in it. Fry mustard seeds, curry leaves, urad daal and chana daal in it. When they start changing their color, add salt, cubed carrots, peas, onions, turmeric and heeng and fry well for ten minutes. Then add water and when it boils, add vermicelli and allow them to cook till water gets absorbed. In the end, garnish with green chilies and coriander and serve.
